Ogun State Pays ₦3.5 Billion in Severance to Former Local Government Officials

The Ogun State Government has paid ₦3.503 billion in severance allowances to former political office-holders from local government councils. This payment covers officials who served between 2016 and 2024.

The beneficiaries include former chairmen, vice-chairmen, secretaries, supervisors, special advisers, and councillors from the state’s 20 local councils and Local Council Development Areas. The announcement was made during a cheque presentation at the Oba’s Complex in Abeokuta.

According to Kayode Akinmade, the Special Adviser on Media and Strategy to the governor, the payments include amounts owed to 526 officials from the 2016–2019 term and 516 from the 2020–2024 term. Akinmade stated that the payments are part of the government’s commitment to settling legitimate debts inherited from previous administrations.

Akinmade emphasized that this payment is a responsible action by the government, ensuring no legitimate liability remains unpaid. He noted that the payment process involved verification by several state departments.

Beneficiaries have received their payments directly into their bank accounts. Those who have not received their payments due to issues with their accounts are encouraged to contact the ministry with the necessary documents.

Ganiyu Hamzat, the state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, confirmed the payments, stating, “Yes, it has been paid.”
