Ondo State Responds to NAF Aircraft Crash with River Fumigation and Health Kits
The Ondo State Government has ordered the fumigation of a river in Igbokoda, Ilaje Local Government Area, due to complaints from residents about a strong smell following a recent aircraft crash. This directive was announced by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
In addition to fumigation, the government will distribute nose masks and other health kits to protect residents from potential health risks linked to the crash. The aircraft, belonging to the Nigerian Air Force, crashed last week, raising alarms about possible environmental contamination.
The river is a vital resource for the local community, providing water for daily activities and livelihoods. Concerns about pollution are particularly pressing for those who depend on the river. The governor emphasized that the fumigation aims to prevent any disease outbreaks in the area.
Governor Aiyedatiwa also instructed the Ilaje Local Government to ensure that residents receive clean drinking water through tankers if tests show the river is polluted. This arrangement will remain in place until a long-term solution is found.
Residents have expressed worries about the foul odor and potential contamination of the river, calling for immediate action to safeguard public health. The state government is committed to supporting the Nigerian Air Force in its recovery efforts and ensuring the safety and well-being of the community.
While the government has taken these steps, it has not confirmed whether tests have shown contamination of the river or when the fumigation will start.
