PANDEF Supports Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and Calls for Increased Oil Revenue Share

The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has expressed strong support for the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, praising President Bola Tinubu for starting this important infrastructure initiative. After a meeting in Abuja, PANDEF’s National Leader, Dr. Godknows Igali, dismissed claims that no studies were done before the project began, noting that various government agencies had previously conducted thorough research in the area.

Igali emphasized the need for a clear commitment from the President to ensure the project’s completion. He highlighted the highway’s historical significance, stating that it has been a topic of national discussion for many years, especially concerning the development and connectivity of Niger Delta communities.

PANDEF also announced the creation of a high-level technical committee to assist the Federal Ministry of Works in executing the project. They stressed that the highway should be built alongside the East-West Road and other neglected routes in the region.

While supporting the project, PANDEF expressed concern over mixed messages from the Minister of Works, David Umahi, regarding the project’s feasibility. They insisted that the highway’s timely completion is crucial for the region, which plays a vital role in the nation’s economy.

Additionally, PANDEF called for a review of the current oil revenue sharing formula, which allocates only 13% to oil-producing states. They are demanding an increase to at least 50% to help these states address environmental and developmental challenges. The forum also urged the government to take legislative action to eliminate the distinction between onshore and offshore oil revenue.

Furthermore, PANDEF advocated for the development of gas-based industries and modular refineries in the region, emphasizing the importance of strategic investments. They also called for responsible governance and peaceful civic engagement ahead of the upcoming elections, encouraging residents to vote for candidates who align with the region’s needs.
