Rep Oyekunle Grieves With Bodija Traders After Tragic Rainstorm Kills One and Wrecks Market Stalls

A dark cloud has fallen over the popular Bodija International Market in Ibadan following a violent rainstorm that left one person dead and property worth millions of Naira completely destroyed.

The heavy downpour, which caught many traders off guard, came with fierce winds and flash floods that tore through market blocks, ripping off zinc roofs and collapsing weak structures. Amidst the chaos, a local individual tragically lost their life, turning a regular trading day into a scene of deep morning for the community.

Reacting to the disaster, Hon. Folajimi Oyekunle, the lawmaker representing the Ibadan North Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, expressed deep pain over the incident. He described the sudden loss of life as a devastating blow to the immediate community and the entire state.

“It is deeply painful to lose a hardworking citizen who simply went out to make a living,” Oyekunle stated. “My heart goes out to the grieving family, the market leadership, and every single trader who has been forced to count terrible losses from this natural disaster.”

The storm did not just claim a life; it also dealt a severe economic blow to hundreds of small business owners. Countless stalls were flooded, and stored goods ranging from foodstuffs to valuable equipment were completely washed away or ruined by the rampaging waters.

In the wake of the tragedy, the lawmaker has made an urgent appeal to emergency response teams, including the state and national emergency management agencies, to quickly step in and provide immediate relief materials to the affected traders. He also promised to use his legislative office to advocate for better structural developments in the market, emphasizing that modern, storm-resistant shops and deep drainage channels are no longer optional if local businesses are to be protected from extreme weather.
