Six Arrested in Borno for Phone Theft and Bank Fraud

The Borno State Police Command has arrested six people in connection with a mobile phone theft and the alleged illegal withdrawal of N5.65 million from the victim’s bank account. The arrests followed a complaint from a resident of Damboa Road in Maiduguri.

According to the police, the victim, identified as Abba K, reported that his Infinix Smart 8 phone went missing after he got off a commercial tricycle on October 13, 2026. The police spokesperson, ASP Nahum Daso, said the victim informed the police shortly after discovering the phone was gone.

Following the report, the Commissioner of Police directed the Violent Crime Response Unit to investigate. Through careful investigation, including digital analysis and intelligence gathering, the police arrested the six suspects who allegedly confessed to the crime.

The suspects reportedly admitted to stealing the phone and withdrawing money from the victim’s bank account. They also stated that they shared the stolen money among themselves. Both the stolen phone and the full amount of N5.65 million have been recovered.

The police announced that the case will be taken to court once the investigation is complete. They emphasized their commitment to protecting the community and urged residents to be cautious while using public transport. The police also encouraged people to report any suspicious activities.

In a related incident, the Bauchi State Police Command recently arrested two suspects involved in a robbery where mobile phones and other valuables were stolen from a hotel compound.
