Sokoto Residents Alarmed by Suspected Child Deaths from Diphtheria Outbreak
Residents of Sokoto State are deeply concerned about reported child deaths suspected to be caused by diphtheria. This outbreak has raised fears among parents, who are calling for urgent action to stop the spread of the disease and prevent more fatalities.
The state government had previously warned residents and schools to take precautions against diphtheria. However, many locals feel that the response has not been sufficient. One father from Kwalkwalawa community shared that his six-year-old son died after showing symptoms he believed were related to diphtheria. The boy’s condition worsened suddenly on a Sunday morning, and despite rushing him to the hospital, the family was told there was no proper treatment available.
In their desperation, the family turned to traditional medicine, but sadly, the child did not survive. In another instance, residents of Rikina village reported that two children died after developing similar symptoms. These cases have led to calls for better monitoring and immediate action from health officials to stop the disease from spreading, especially among children.
A doctor in the area confirmed that children are dying due to the outbreak and emphasized the need for a stronger response from health authorities. He stated that early detection and treatment are crucial to reducing complications and fatalities linked to diphtheria.
Residents are also urging the state government to provide regular updates about the outbreak, including the number of confirmed and suspected cases, deaths, available treatment facilities, and measures being taken to control the situation. Attempts to reach the Sokoto State Ministry of Health for comments were unsuccessful, as officials were unavailable for immediate response.
