Roy Keane Says He’d Toss Manchester City Medals After Guilty Verdict on Financial Rules
Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has expressed strong feelings about Manchester City’s recent guilty verdict for breaking financial rules. He stated that if he were a player at City, he would throw his medals in the bin.
The Premier League announced on Tuesday that Manchester City was found guilty of serious financial rule violations that occurred over nine years, from 2009 to 2018. An independent commission discovered that City used fake contracts with business partners to secretly channel over £830 million into their football operations.
Despite the findings, Manchester City continues to deny any wrongdoing. During the time covered by the charges, the club won eight trophies, including three Premier League titles. Keane believes that these achievements are now tainted by the financial misconduct. He told ITV Sport, “They won it on the pitch because cheating was going on.”
The Premier League has not yet decided on any penalties for City, but they are expected to announce a punishment soon. The club has until October 2 to appeal the commission’s decision. Possible penalties could include the loss of Premier League titles.
Wayne Rooney, another former Manchester United player, shared his thoughts on the situation. He said he wouldn’t feel right accepting a Premier League medal if one of City’s titles was taken away. Rooney believes that City could face serious consequences, including relegation to a lower league.
Former manager Mauricio Pochettino commented on the impact of the verdict, stating that it has damaged the integrity of the sport. He noted that many clubs followed the rules while others did not, raising questions about the fairness of financial regulations in the Premier League.
La Liga president Javier Tebas also weighed in, calling for the harshest penalties possible under Premier League rules due to the severity and duration of City’s breaches.
