Storm Boelo Causes Deaths and Power Outages Across Northern Europe

Two powerful storms, Boelo and Austen, have struck northern Europe, resulting in at least one death and widespread power outages. The storms brought strong winds, heavy rain, and flooding, affecting transport and leaving many homes without electricity across Britain, France, and Germany.

Reports indicate that over 150,000 homes lost power due to the storms. In France, around 59,000 homes were still without electricity as of Sunday. The British electricity network also reported significant outages, while Germany faced power cuts affecting thousands of households.

In Scotland, a 60-year-old man died when a tree fell on him. Two women were injured by another falling tree in central Scotland. The storms caused blocked roads and damaged railway lines due to fallen trees and power cables. Wind gusts reached up to 135 kilometers per hour in parts of western Scotland.

The Met Office has cautioned that dangerous conditions may continue, advising people to avoid unnecessary travel and be cautious of flying debris and coastal hazards. Air travel was also impacted, with hundreds of flights canceled or diverted, particularly at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport.

In France, Storm Austen caused significant disruption in the regions of Normandy and Brittany. In Germany, a blackout near Freiburg-Breisgau affected mobile phone services and forced a local hospital to limit its operations to emergency cases. Strong winds also caused scaffolding to collapse, injuring two people in Nastätten, while falling trees injured several individuals in Brussels.

Authorities are currently assessing the damage as emergency workers work to clear roads, restore electricity, and respond to flooding reports. The storms have raised concerns about the impact of extreme weather on transport and electricity systems. Experts suggest that climate change may intensify such weather events, though each storm requires individual analysis.
