President Tinubu Calls for Solutions to Medical Brain Drain in West Africa

On October 22, 2026, President Bola Tinubu received a Fellowship from the West African College of Physicians (WACP) at the State House in Abuja. During the event, he emphasized the need for the College to find effective solutions to the ongoing migration of healthcare professionals from the region.

Tinubu warned that this trend is straining healthcare systems, making it harder for people to access essential medical services. He called on the College’s leadership to use their upcoming conference to address these challenges.

He stated, “We are more challenged in Africa than anywhere else,” highlighting the ongoing health issues, including the recent Ebola outbreak. The President expressed his commitment to supporting healthcare professionals and improving the health sector.

Tinubu also praised the efforts of Professor Mohammed Ali Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, for his role in driving health reforms. He reiterated his government’s dedication to making healthcare more accessible and affordable for Nigerians.

The WACP awarded the fellowship to Tinubu in recognition of his contributions to healthcare reforms in Nigeria. Dr. Mamadou Mourtala Ka, the College President, noted that the fellowship is typically reserved for leaders who have significantly impacted health delivery in West Africa.

Professor Musa Dankyau, the College’s Secretary-General, mentioned that the fellowship has only been awarded eight times in the College’s 50-year history. He acknowledged Tinubu’s efforts in health infrastructure and disease prevention, stating that over $2.2 billion has been invested in improving healthcare in Nigeria.
