Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, recently criticized Rotimi Amaechi’s predictions regarding the 2027 presidential election. Wike claimed that fewer than 200 people attended Amaechi’s town hall meeting in Cross River State.
During a media chat, Wike responded to comments suggesting that the political alliance of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and Amaechi was worrying supporters of President Bola Tinubu. Wike recounted Amaechi’s statements at the meeting, where he suggested that Atiku was likely to win the election based on the regions of the main candidates.
Wike quoted Amaechi, saying, “Atiku is from where? North. Tinubu is from where? South. Obi is from where? South. Donald Duke is from where? South. Atiku has won the election.” Wike questioned the logic behind a vice-presidential candidate making such a bold claim at a town hall event.
He also pointed out that Amaechi’s argument seemed to rest on the idea that Atiku, being the leading candidate from the north, would have an advantage over his southern opponents. Wike referenced the results of the 2023 presidential election, asking, “In 2023, Atiku ran, Obi ran, Tinubu ran, who won?”
Wike emphasized that the upcoming election in 2027 would not necessarily mirror the previous one, stating, “2027 will be totally different from 2023.”
