Wike and Rivers Lawmakers Meet Governor Fubara to Discuss Political Reconciliation

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, met with members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and local government chairmen in Port Harcourt on Sunday evening. This closed-door meeting with Governor Siminalayi Fubara was the first of its kind at the governor’s residence.

Wike’s delegation included the speaker of the House, Rt Hon Martin Amaewhule, and Kingsley Chinda, the candidate from the All Progressives Congress for the upcoming 2027 elections. The gathering aimed to continue discussions that began weeks earlier, focusing on reconciliation efforts in the state.

Sources say the meeting sought to address the political crisis that has affected Rivers State and to find ways to include Fubara’s supporters in the political landscape leading up to the next elections. Following the meeting, Wike, Fubara, and the lawmakers appeared pleased, smiling and taking photos together.

In the past, Fubara and the House of Assembly had been involved in significant conflict, which included attempts to impeach the governor. This turmoil was partly due to disagreements between Fubara and Wike, who previously served as governor. Despite recent moves toward reconciliation, Wike has indicated that Fubara will not be the party’s candidate for a second term, instead supporting Chinda.

As the 2027 elections approach, Wike is working to reunite leaders from different political factions in Rivers State.
