Zamfara State Launches Solar Mini-Grids to Power Over 125,000 Homes

The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has begun developing 37 solar mini-grids in Zamfara State. This project aims to connect over 125,000 homes across seven local government areas. The initiative is part of a larger plan to create a local electricity market and attract private investment.

The mini-grids will have a total solar generation capacity of about 18.8 megawatts. They will serve areas including Gummi, Gusau, Kaura Namoda, Maradun, Shinkafi, Tsafe, and Zurmi. The REA announced this development following a groundbreaking ceremony held recently.

Governor Dauda Lawal emphasized that the new electricity policy aims to create a market that encourages investment and supports the state’s economic goals. He stated, “Reliable electricity is essential for agriculture, industry, healthcare, education, and job creation.” The collaboration with the REA will also focus on providing solar power to public institutions like hospitals and schools.

Chief Joseph Tegbe, the Minister of Power, highlighted the Federal Government’s commitment to decentralized electricity infrastructure. He noted that the recent Electricity Act allows states to develop their own electricity markets, and the government will support those making practical efforts to attract private investment.

Dr. Abba Aliyu, Managing Director of the REA, explained that the project represents a move towards building an integrated energy market. He pointed out that the benefits of connecting over 125,000 homes extend beyond just providing electricity; it will also enhance productivity for businesses, strengthen agricultural value chains, and create jobs.

Aliyu warned that without a solid regulatory and commercial framework, the electricity infrastructure might not be sustainable. He stressed the importance of having clear policies and effective institutions to support the electricity economy.

In addition to the mini-grids, Tegbe also inaugurated two solar projects developed by the Zamfara State Government, which include facilities for a hospital and the Government House. These projects are part of a broader strategy to improve public services and promote cleaner transportation options in the state.
