Nathaniel Bassey Becomes First African Gospel Artist to Reach One Billion YouTube Views
Nigerian gospel singer and pastor Nathaniel Bassey has made history by becoming the first African gospel artist to reach over one billion views on YouTube. His official channel, Nathaniel Bassey Main, has gathered more than 1.014 billion views and 5.24 million subscribers since it started in 2011.
This achievement coincides with the October 2026 edition of the Hallelujah Challenge, an online prayer and worship program that Bassey founded in 2017. The Hallelujah Challenge features midnight sessions of praise, worship, and prayer, drawing participants from around the world.
What began as an online worship gathering has evolved into a global Christian movement, with thousands joining live sessions and millions watching recorded versions. Bassey is well-known for popular gospel songs like Imela, Onise Iyanu, Olowogbogboro, and You Are God, which have helped him gain a large following both in Nigeria and internationally.
The milestone of one billion views has excited his fans, with some suggesting he could find ways to earn money from his growing audience. However, Bassey has emphasized that the Hallelujah Challenge is mainly about worship and spiritual devotion, not about making money.
