Ogun State Polytechnic Lecturers Demand Action to Avoid Strike
The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics in Ogun State has warned that state-owned polytechnics could face a strike unless Governor Dapo Abiodun addresses their demands. The union has given the government a 15-day ultimatum, which is now down to just six days.
During a press briefing at the ASUP Secretariat in Abeokuta, union representatives expressed frustration over the lack of funding for polytechnic education. They noted that the monthly financial support of N5 million, which some schools receive, has not changed in over ten years.
Comrade Kolawole Adeyemi, speaking on behalf of the union, highlighted that the government has failed to implement the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance and Earned Academic Allowance, which are part of an agreement made with the federal government in 2026. The union has previously reached out to the state government twice about these issues but has not received a satisfactory response.
The union is particularly concerned about the lack of funding for pensions and the delay in payments to Pension Funds Administrators, which affects the retirement security of workers. They also pointed out that many polytechnics have not received promised financial support this year, which adds to the financial strain on employees.
ASUP is urging the state government to increase the monthly funding for all state-owned polytechnics to N100 million to meet current economic needs. They believe that adequate investment in polytechnic education is essential for economic growth and job creation.
As the deadline approaches, the union hopes the government will take action to resolve these issues and prevent disruption to the academic calendar.
