Abia Commissioner Urges Journalists to Combat AI-Generated Fake News Ahead of Elections

Abia State Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, has issued a warning to journalists about the rising threat of fake news generated by artificial intelligence. This warning comes as the state prepares for the 2027 general elections.

Kanu highlighted that misleading images, altered videos, and false audio recordings could be used by political groups to sway public opinion and create tension during the elections. He emphasized the importance of accuracy and verification in journalism, stating that just because a story goes viral does not mean it is true.

The Commissioner spoke during the opening of a three-day media retreat for the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Umuahia. The retreat, themed “The Future of Journalism in an Era of Disinformation,” aims to prepare local journalists for the upcoming elections. Over 50 media professionals attended the event.

Kanu urged journalists to independently verify government projects instead of relying solely on official statements. He encouraged them to visit project sites, talk to beneficiaries, and report both successes and failures. “Where government is doing well, report it. Where there are shortcomings, bring them to public attention,” he said.

Pastor Ralph Egbu, a former Abia Commissioner for Information, also spoke at the retreat. He expressed concern over the declining trust in journalism and called on reporters to uphold the profession’s integrity. Egbu stressed that truth and objectivity should be the foundation of journalism.

He encouraged journalists to ask tough questions and hold public officials accountable. Egbu also warned about the potential negative impact of artificial intelligence and financial interests on journalism, especially with the elections approaching.
