Emir Sanusi Critiques Nigeria’s Handling of Corruption and Political Connections

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, recently expressed concerns about corruption in Nigeria, stating that individuals can evade accountability if they have the right political connections. He made these comments during an interview with Channels Television in Lagos, at the launch of a new book on Nigerian financial law.

Sanusi emphasized the need to review existing laws to identify their weaknesses and to better implement them. He praised the work of Dr. Wahab Shittu, an anti-corruption lawyer, for analyzing current laws and suggesting improvements to tackle unexplained wealth and corruption.

He pointed out that while Nigeria has institutions and courts meant to address corruption, political influences often interfere with their effectiveness. Sanusi claimed that some corruption cases are dismissed due to the political affiliations of those involved, which raises doubts about whether these legal actions are genuinely aimed at fighting corruption or merely political maneuvers.

He cited the case of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who has been in detention for several months without conviction, as an example of how political connections can affect legal proceedings. Sanusi urged that political leaders and the judiciary must commit to using laws for their intended purpose to make real progress against corruption.

In conclusion, Sanusi stated that while revising laws is important, it is equally crucial to focus on the institutions responsible for enforcing these laws. Without this dual approach, he warned that many would continue to believe they could escape justice through political connections.
