Governor Otti Advocates for Celebrating Integrity During Life, Not Posthumously

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has criticized the tradition of honoring people only after they pass away. He believes that those with genuine achievements should be celebrated while they are still alive. Otti made these remarks during the 90th birthday celebration of Emeritus Professor Benson Oluikpe in Umuahia.

Otti’s administration aims to change what he calls a culture of recognizing individuals with questionable backgrounds, such as fraudsters and drug traffickers. He emphasized that public recognition should be given to those whose accomplishments inspire others, especially the younger generation.

At the event, Otti highlighted the recent success of five Abia schoolchildren who won an international competition in Qatar. He described their achievement as part of a broader effort to promote excellence and positive values in the state.

The governor also shared a personal story about his father questioning him in 1989 about the source of a small amount of money he sent home. This anecdote underscored the importance of accountability and integrity, which Otti believes parents should instill in their children.

During the celebration, Professor Oluikpe expressed his gratitude for the honor and praised Otti for his humility and wisdom. He recalled their first meeting in 2013 and how it influenced his support for Otti’s political career. Oluikpe also encouraged public officials to be generous and impactful in their roles.

In response, Otti reiterated his belief that the timing of events is guided by a higher power. He announced plans to honor another notable Abia-born professor and inventor in December, who is recognized for his work in cancer treatment. Otti stated that recognition would be open to all outstanding individuals, regardless of their political or religious affiliations.
