Ibadan Group Calls for Peaceful Elections Ahead of 2027 in Oyo State
The Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII) has urged politicians in Oyo State to avoid violence and promote peaceful campaigning as the 2027 general elections approach. Chief Ajeniyi Ajewole, the President-General of the council, made this call in a statement released by the council’s Publicity Secretary, Kola Olomide, in Ibadan on Saturday.
Ajewole expressed concern over recent violent clashes among political party supporters in the Molete area of Ibadan. He condemned these attacks, warning that they could jeopardize peace and security in the state. He stated, “We urge politicians not to return Ibadan and Oyo to the era of wanton killings and destruction of lives and property.”
The council called on candidates and their supporters to practice restraint and respect the rights of others, regardless of political differences. Ajewole emphasized that campaigns should focus on issues, encouraging politicians to present their plans to the public and explain how they will address community needs.
Moreover, the council encouraged all candidates and political parties to engage peacefully and allow voters to make informed choices without fear of intimidation or violence. Ajewole also advised political leaders to warn their supporters against making inflammatory statements that could heighten tensions during the campaign period.
He added, “Political ambition should not be pursued at the expense of the lives and property of the people. We must all recognize that the peace of Ibadan and Oyo is a collective responsibility.”
The council also called on security agencies to stay alert and ensure that those involved in political violence are held accountable under the law. Recently, some attackers targeted supporters of the Accord Party’s governorship candidate, Oriyomi Hamzat, during a peaceful procession in Molete. The state Police Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed the incident, stating that Hamzat’s supporters were ambushed during their event.
