Israeli Defense Minister Denies Rift Between Netanyahu and Army Chief Over Iran
Israel’s Defense Minister, Israel Katz, stated on Monday that claims of a disagreement between the army and the government over actions related to Iran are completely false. This follows a report from Israel’s Channel 12 that suggested a confrontation between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and army chief Eyal Zamir.
Katz described the rumors as an attempt to undermine the Netanyahu-led government ahead of upcoming elections. He emphasized that there is full coordination between the political leaders and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) regarding the Iran situation.
Channel 12’s report indicated that Zamir had requested a thorough discussion and legal assurances before following through on a new directive he received. However, the report did not clarify what this directive entailed. It did mention concerns within the army that the ongoing conflict with Iran could be used for political advantage.
Katz firmly stated that Israel has no plans to initiate an attack on Iran before the elections. Opposition leader Yair Lapid reacted to the report, accusing Netanyahu of trying to escalate tensions with Iran to delay the elections. Lapid claimed that Netanyahu is losing control and called for his removal from office.
Netanyahu has been campaigning on his strong security record, asserting that he is the only leader capable of effectively addressing the threat from Iran.
