Kwankwaso Declares Obi-Led Govt Will Reintroduce Fuel Support Through Refining and Structural Shifts

The political debate surrounding Nigeria’s energy pricing took a fresh twist as the vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Kwankwaso, disclosed that an administration under presidential flagbearer Peter Obi would reintroduce fuel subsidies in a modified form.

Speaking during an exclusive television interview, Kwankwaso addressed the mounting cost-of-living crisis and the severe economic fallout of the current administration’s petrol subsidy removal. While discussing how the coalition intends to approach energy policy ahead of the 2027 general elections, Kwankwaso emphasized that the government must intervene to ensure citizens can purchase fuel at reasonable, sustainable prices.

“No, no, no, look. We are bringing subsidy in our own way,” Kwankwaso stated when pressed on whether the opposition would completely avoid market-interventionist measures. He clarified that rather than reviving the corruption-plagued import subsidies of the past, an NDC government would prioritize massive state-backed investments in domestic refining infrastructure to crash production and supply costs.

“If individuals in this country can build refineries, I see no reason why government under certain circumstances will not build refining facilities… We will do whatever it takes, really, to put the price of oil down,” he added.

Kwankwaso criticized the current administration for abruptly abolishing the subsidy framework on “day one” without cushioning the economy against cascading hyperinflation. However, his remarks have drawn immediate attention from political analysts, noting an apparent strategic friction with Peter Obi’s previously stated positions, which have consistently opposed returning to traditional subsidy regimes in favor of redirecting public funds toward education, health, and infrastructural productivity.

As opposition architects work to harmonize their policy manifestos, the debate over fuel pricing underscores how energy costs remain the defining fault line of contemporary Nigerian politics.
