Lagos State Approves 101 Private Schools, Emphasizes Child Protection

The Lagos State Government has approved 101 private schools and warned school owners against hiding cases of child abuse and bullying. This announcement was made during a presentation of provisional approval letters at the NUT Pavilion in Ikeja.

Jamiu Alli-Balogun, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, emphasized the importance of reporting any abuse to the proper authorities. He also urged school owners to hire qualified teachers and improve their facilities to comply with local education laws.

The approved schools include 63 nursery and primary schools, 35 secondary schools, two sixth-form schools, and one boarding school. The government aims to ensure these institutions meet educational standards and provide quality services.

To help verify the authenticity of the approval letters, the government will introduce QR codes. This measure is intended to prevent the use of fake documents. Additionally, an automated school registration process is being developed to streamline applications and reduce the need for school owners to visit government offices repeatedly.

Officials stressed that provisional approval does not exempt schools from following regulations. Schools must also complete a Subject Recognition Inspection to qualify for serving as examination centers for various educational boards.

The event included participation from various education officials and stakeholders, highlighting the government’s commitment to improving education in Lagos.
