Oil Tanker Catches Fire After Striking Mine in Strait of Hormuz

An oil tanker is on fire in the Strait of Hormuz after it hit a mine, according to Iran’s Revolutionary Guards. This incident occurred amid ongoing tensions in the region, which is crucial for global oil transport.

The Revolutionary Guards reported that the tanker was carrying over two million barrels of crude oil and was trying to pass through the strait without permission. They claimed the vessel struck a mine, causing an explosion and a significant fire.

The exact location of the incident was not disclosed. The Strait of Hormuz, which is about 30 kilometers wide at its narrowest point, is bordered by Iran to the north and Oman to the south. Since the start of the ongoing conflict in February, Iran has taken control of the strait and requires all ships to obtain its approval before passing through.

The Guards also stated that the tanker was attempting to navigate the strait with support from the United States, having turned off its tracking systems to avoid detection. A video was released showing the ship engulfed in flames.

In response to Iran’s actions in the Strait of Hormuz, the United States has implemented a naval counter-blockade against Iranian oil exports. Recently, a commander from the Revolutionary Guards warned that any vessel that disables its navigation systems would be viewed as a threat.
