Lisandro Martínez Criticizes Manchester United’s Leadership After Atlético Loss

Lisandro Martínez, a defender for Manchester United, has spoken out against the club’s leadership after their 2-0 loss to Atlético Madrid in the UEFA Champions League on October 13, 2026. He believes the club did not do enough to strengthen the team during the summer transfer window.

Martínez defended manager Michael Carrick, suggesting that the focus should not only be on the coach and players when things go wrong. He specifically urged Jason Wilcox, the club’s director of football, to invest more in the squad to help the team compete effectively.

After the match, Martínez expressed his frustration, stating, “Really poor. Really poor.” He emphasized the need for more investment, saying, “I expect more from our technical director. We did a fantastic season last season and now we expect more from the top, more players to compete.” He acknowledged Atlético’s strength but stressed the importance of building a strong squad.

Martínez also questioned the constant changes in management when results are disappointing, suggesting that other areas of the club should be evaluated. He stated, “You can’t keep changing, changing, changing the manager. What about other areas?”

Despite the criticism, he admitted that the players also need to improve. He mentioned that while they must perform better, having a solid squad is crucial for competing in tough European matches.

In response to Martínez’s comments, Carrick said he had not seen the interview and did not want to comment on it. He noted that after a disappointing game, emotions can run high, but he believes the players are committed to improving. Carrick stated, “We all care and show that in different ways but now is the time to be together and work through.”
