Tinubu Moves to Stop Tech Brain Drain, Targets Global Capital and Remote Jobs via Digital Free Zones

In a major strategic push to position Nigeria as a dominant global technology and service hub, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the immediate implementation of the country’s Digital Free Zones initiative, setting a strict 180-day deadline for a comprehensive operational roadmap.

The bold economic directive aims to reverse a long-standing trend where promising Nigerian technology startups and innovators feel compelled to migrate their headquarters, operations, and intellectual property overseas merely to secure international venture capital and access global markets.

Under the new initiative, the Federal Government is modernizing its decades-old free zone framework to accommodate the unique demands of the digital economy. At the heart of this rollout is the $500 million Itana Innovation project based in Alaro City, Lagos. Licensed by the Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA) and backed by the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC), Itana will combine modern regulatory policies, digital infrastructure, and an innovation campus to help African startups scale internationally without leaving the continent.

President Tinubu emphasized that the administration’s vision transcends traditional physical technology parks, focusing instead on creating an ecosystem where African companies can incorporate, raise capital, and govern operations from domestic soil while servicing clients worldwide.

Furthermore, the initiative is engineered to unlock remote employment opportunities for a wide array of local talents including software engineers, developers, designers, legal practitioners, and accountants allowing young Nigerians in cities like Kano, Ibadan, Enugu, Minna, Maiduguri, and Warri to service global enterprises seamlessly from home.

To drive the framework, the President has directed the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole who serves as Vice-Chairman and Implementation Coordinator of the Presidential Steering Committee on Digital Free Zones to collaborate closely with the Itana project team. The steering committee is tasked with streamlining critical operating variables, including taxation, banking, immigration, data regulation, and the complete digitization of government services to foster an unbeatable ease of doing business.

Government officials note that the initiative will also strategically position Nigeria to maximize regional trade expansion under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), ensuring that the immense economic value generated by local tech talent remains within the domestic economy.
