Wheel Defect Suspected! NRC Breaks Silence on Tragic Warri-Itakpe Train Derailment, Rules Out Vandalism

The Nigerian Railway Corporation has released its official preliminary report on the Warri-Itakpe train derailment in Delta State, revealing that a sudden wheel defect and emergency brake application are currently being investigated as the primary causes.

The incident occurred near the Goodluck Jonathan Railway Station in Owa-Oyibu as the train, carrying 442 passengers and 40 operational personnel from Itakpe, experienced a sudden derailment. Four passengers tragically lost their lives while 64 others sustained varying degrees of injury, with emergency response teams successfully evacuating all stranded individuals within two hours.

Addressing public speculation, NRC Managing Director Kayode Opeifa stated that technical assessments indicate a sudden mechanical fault in the train’s wheel assembly may have generated abnormal track friction, causing the coaches to lose stability. Investigators found no evidence of missing track components or deliberate damage, ruling out track vandalism, a issue that had previously plagued the rail line.

While physical repairs on the affected track section have been completed, the NRC emphasized that commercial passenger operations along the Warri-Itakpe route will remain temporarily suspended. Passenger services will only resume after safety inspectors complete an exhaustive audit of all locomotives, rolling stock, and track infrastructure across the corridor.
