Anambra Government Defends Road Projects Against Social Media Criticism

The Anambra State Government has rejected claims on social media that its road construction projects are substandard. Okey Ezeobi, the state Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, made this statement during a press briefing in Awka, the state capital, on Wednesday.

Ezeobi urged residents to ignore the negative online comments, stating that the roads built under Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration are in good condition and that construction is ongoing across the state. He described the allegations as politically motivated.

Since taking office in 2022, Soludo’s administration has reportedly constructed over 908 kilometers of roads, with more than 744 kilometers fully asphalted. Ezeobi claimed this achievement surpasses the road work done by the last three governors combined.

Addressing concerns about some roads, Ezeobi noted that less than five kilometers of the asphalted roads have shown issues. He explained that these problems are mainly due to heavy rainfall and underground water, which were not fully accounted for during construction.

He emphasized that the majority of the roads are projected to last for 20 years, and some minor issues were caused by natural events rather than poor construction. Ezeobi also mentioned that reconstruction work on the affected roads would start soon and would not cost the state government anything.

Additionally, he dismissed claims about the Ekwulobia Flyover being abandoned due to integrity test failures, assuring that it would be commissioned shortly. Ezeobi acknowledged that the heavy rains this year have been unprecedented and have impacted road infrastructure across the region.
