ADC Chairman Emphasizes Party Constitution After Court Ruling
Nafiu Bala Gombe, the National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stated that no political party leader is above the party’s constitution. His comments come after a Federal High Court ruling regarding a leadership dispute within the party.
Gombe highlighted that the court’s decision reinforced the idea that leadership roles in political parties should follow legal and constitutional processes, rather than being imposed or decided by political convenience. He emphasized the importance of judicial intervention when parties ignore their own rules.
In his statement, Gombe praised the trial judge for handling the case with independence and fairness. He described the ruling as a critical test of judicial independence and raised important questions about party autonomy and the responsibilities of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
He stressed that political parties must adhere to their internal rules and that courts have a role in ensuring compliance. Gombe declared that leadership must be established through lawful processes, and that individuals have a right to seek justice in court if their rights are violated.
Gombe believes the judgment not only affects the current dispute but also shows that the judiciary can resist political pressure and make decisions based on the law. He expressed hope that this would restore public confidence in the judicial system.
Finally, he thanked supporters for their loyalty and urged the judiciary to continue upholding impartial justice and the rule of law. Gombe concluded by reiterating the need for political parties to respect their constitutions and ensure lawful leadership succession.
