Gombe Electoral Officials Urged to Support Disability Inclusion for 2027 Elections
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Gombe State, Umar Mukhtar Gajiram, has called on electoral officers to ensure that persons with disabilities (PWDs) are included in all election activities for the 2027 general elections. He made this announcement during an event focused on disability inclusion held on Monday in Gombe.
Gajiram highlighted the importance of taking specific steps to allow PWDs to participate in the electoral process without facing discrimination or barriers. The event gathered electoral officers, disability desk officers from local government areas, and representatives from disability groups to discuss the rights of PWDs, especially their right to vote.
During the meeting, Gajiram, represented by Administrative Secretary Fadimatu Aliyu Bakari, stressed that including the needs of PWDs should be a core part of electoral planning. He stated, “Disability inclusion should not be treated as an additional responsibility but as an important part of our work.”
He also encouraged disability desk officers to regularly communicate with PWDs, listen to their concerns, and report any challenges they face in participating in elections. Gajiram emphasized that no eligible Nigerian should be left out of the electoral process due to a disability.
In support of these efforts, Maimuna Abubakar, the Gombe State Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), praised INEC for organizing the engagement. She described ensuring voting rights for all as a matter of justice and equality. “No one should be left out of voting. It is their right to vote, not a privilege,” she said.
Gambo Mohammed, Chairman of the Joint Association of Persons Living with Disabilities in Gombe, also recognized INEC’s efforts and encouraged PWDs to responsibly utilize the support provided to them. He warned against misusing the opportunities designed to help them participate in elections.
The discussions underscored the need for collaboration between INEC, government agencies, and disability organizations to promote an inclusive electoral process as the 2027 elections approach.
