Dr. Sylvanus Eferebo, the National Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Marine Engineers and Naval Architects (NIMENA), has been honored with the Maritime Innovation and Technology Leadership Award at the 2026 Democracy Heroes Award Africa. The award ceremony took place on Friday, October 9, at the Congress Hall of Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja.
This recognition is part of the 15th edition of the awards, themed “Elevate.” It acknowledges Eferebo’s significant contributions to marine engineering, technological innovation, and leadership in Nigeria’s maritime sector. His work supports efforts to enhance local expertise and promote research and innovation in the maritime and blue economy.
Eferebo has over twenty years of experience in technical consulting and leadership within Nigeria’s maritime and offshore engineering industry. He holds advanced degrees in marine engineering and naval architecture from Rivers State University in Port Harcourt. He is also a registered engineer with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria and a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers.
In addition to his role at NIMENA, Eferebo is the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Somatrix Marine Limited, which specializes in marine consultancy and ship design. He has also played a key role in engineering regulation and maritime policy, serving as a consultant to the House Committee on Nigerian Content Development.
As NIMENA’s National Chairman, Eferebo focuses on improving professional standards and fostering collaboration between government, industry, and academia. His leadership aims to create more opportunities for Nigerian maritime professionals both locally and internationally.
This award adds to his accolades, including his recent elevation to Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, which NIMENA celebrated in January 2026. Many prominent figures, including the Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal, have congratulated him on this achievement.
The 2026 Democracy Heroes Award Africa, organized by Face of Democracy Nigeria Projects, recognizes individuals who have significantly impacted leadership, public service, and national development.
